Australia’s best topographic mapping is now available for mobile devices through Hema Explorer, an offline GPS navigation app designed for planning, navigating and sharing adventures that begin off the beaten track.

Available for iOS and Android phones and tablets, Hema Explorer now features the award-winning Hema Explorer Map in addition to 40,000 points of interest specific to adventure travellers, simple trip recording tools, and the ability to share your adventures with friends, family and other Hema Explorer users online.

Hema Explorer is developed by Hema Maps, an Australian company that has been capturing GPS data on roads, tracks and places worth exploring for over 20 years. By using expedition field teams to update their data, Hema ensures their mapping database is as accurate and comprehensive as possible, which benefits people travelling to out-of-the-way places where the the accuracy of a map is crucial.

For the first time, Hema Maps has compiled their entire database into a single map: the Hema Explorer Map. Covering all of Australia, the Hema Explorer Map is a multi-scale topographic map that features an unparalleled 693,347km of unsealed 4WD tracks throughout Australia. In combination with useful topographic features such as contour lines, detailed river network data, geographic landmarks and more, it’s the best map available for four-wheel drivers, campers, hikers and tourers – and it’s now available for mobile devices.

“The Hema Explorer Map is the most detailed map of its kind in Australia,” said Hema Maps’ senior cartographer, Pierre Kurth.

“No other multi-scale topographic map for Australia is as comprehensive, and no other map contains our level of data for regional and off-road areas.”

In addition to offline access to the Hema Explorer Map and other map sources, Hema Explorer delivers users 40,000 points of interest including campsites, caravan parks, rest areas, dump points, public toilets, lookouts, 24-hour fuel, information centres, roadhouses, wineries and much more. Each point of interest includes additional information such as contact information where applicable, as well any facilities and activities available.

Hema Explorer complements its incomparable content with functional navigation and trip recording tools: generate route lines to use offline, track your position while you travel, record your trail as you move, drop waypoints and take geotagged photos to mark places of importance, as well as view detailed trip statistics like speed and elevation graphed over time.

After you’ve returned from your adventure, you can transfer your trips to your free Hema Explorer Cloud account to backup and share them online. Plan, view and edit your trips on your PC, share them on social media, or post them to the public Trip Gallery directly from your account on the Hema Explorer Cloud website. The Trip Gallery is home to thousands of trips posted by other Hema Explorer users, where you can engage with a community of other like-minded travellers, and download other people’s trips to your device to use on your own adventures.

“The Hema Explorer app is not just a navigation app – it’s an all-in-one solution that allows you to plan, navigate and share your adventures using only one platform,” said Rob Boegheim, Hema Maps’ managing director.

“Now the app is preloaded with our new Hema Explorer Map, Hema Explorer is the best app available for finding adventure in Australia.”

Hema Explorer users can unlock additional app content and features by adding a monthly or yearly Explorer Pro subscription to their standard app, which gives subscribers additional map layers of the Hema Explorer Map, more map sources and premium features for the Hema Explorer Cloud like printing customised maps and online routing.

Hema Explorer is available from the iOS App Store and Google Play for $49.99, while a subscription to Explorer Pro is an additional $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year.
